Space Waste Lab
Right now there are more than 29.000 objects larger than 10 centimeters floating around the earth. It is space waste; parts of broken rockets and satellites. This waste can damage our current satellites, with collisions creating more space waste and disturbing our digital communications. And nobody really knows how to fix it.
"We need to look at space in a better way. What is space waste, how can we fix it, and what is its potential? Space waste is the smog of our universe."
Together with studio Roosegaarde and ESA (the European Space Agency) I delved into the invisible problem and worked together with students and experts to investigate ways to prevent this problem from escalating.
This project has shown me the effort and passion that can go into a project, which has inspired me to not just become a better designer, but also find the story behind every design.
We created a concept that would help create more awareness about the subject and helped people to get a better understanding by making this ‘invisible’ problem more visual.
We came together with Vincent Icke, a professor of theoretical astrophysics, who gave feedback and insights.
The final implementation was then presented to an audience with studio Roosegaarde. Part of our project has been documented in an installment of VPRO Tegenlicht.
